Malaysia is one of the most popular travel destinations in Asia not only among the Asian but also among the travelers from west. KL city is a paradise for shopaholics whether you are looking for branded clothes or if you are on the hunt for cheap and fake items.
Did you know that apart from shopping there is lot more to explore if you are travelling to Malaysia??
It’s worth travelling little away from the busy city of KL and make your way towards the coastal side of the country if you love the beach atmosphere. There are many beaches near Kuala Lumpur to explore.
I’m totally in love with sun, sea and sand and up for it no matter which country I travel to! So I was in search of the nearest beaches to Kuala Lumpur as soon as I finished my shopping spree within 2 days of arriving to the city bursting with day and night shopping.
Port Dickson, Pulau Indah, Bagan Lalang, Penang, Pangkor are few beach getaways which can be easily reached from the city. Some can be reached by land, by air or by ferry.
After a thorough research, the traveler inside me screamed out for “ Pangkor” then I decided to travel to Pangkor next day morning and I absolutely fell in love with this beautiful place..
As a first time traveler to Malaysia I was on the look out for all possible reliable travel guides which could give me clues as to where I should be heading in this beautiful country…
Especially if you are visiting for the first time its always best to choose your destinations within Malaysia before hand as it’s a tropical country which is blessed with gorgeous beaches, adventures forests, cooling highlands and shopping escapades.
Pangkor island is situated on Perak coast of the island and you need to travel by land to Lumut Jetty which takes about 3.5- 4 hours and sit back and be ready to enjoy the ride as you say good bye to the hectic city and start enjoying the greenery that soothes your eye.
From the Jetty get into a Ferry and within 20- 30 minutes time you can reach this laid back island of Pangkor.
If you have been to luxury beach holidays like Maldives or Seashells with glossy blue water and white sandy shores, let me tell you that the experience in Pangkor is pretty different. It is quite a laid back place with fishing villages and lets you have a glimpse of local Malaysian life style.. well you would pay like one third of what you would be spending in such luxury holiday so you know where to set your standards on this holiday!
Right before you reach the island you will be passing through fishing villages which clearly shows the tough life spent by them. For a moment my heart just dropped thinking that it was my final destination and was so glad when the ferry kept moving away and there we were reaching the island which looked so beautiful, clam and quite while lot of greenery can be seen around the island. This was the start to my perfect beach holiday in Malaysia!
Pangkor Sandy Beach resort, my second home in Pangkor Island
After few minutes of arriving at the Jetty I managed to find transport to reach the hotel I had booked online. Pangkor Sandy beach resort is not too far from the jetty and when you reach this small cozy hotel you are sure to be welcomed by one of the friendly staff at the hotel. I had booked a deluxe room which was on the 2nd floor with a nice pool view… couldn’t wait to get into my swim suit and jump into the pool which looks absolutely tempting..
There are resorts with much better comfort if you are willing to pay some extra bucks for your accommodation but I decided to go with this hotel which was pretty cheap but yet was clean and cozy. When you reach the island in the ferry you will pass through few more islands which are spreading across the coast of perak state. Pangkor Laut Island which host the luxurious Pangkor Laut resort will be an ideal choice if you are looking for a luxurious accommodation with more privacy!
I woke up to the morning bliss of the island and walked along the beach catching some sea breeze and sunshine on my face. My morning couldn’t get any better with the yummy heavy breakfast at the main restaurant which was wrapped with local authenticity. When I needed the rice to be served without chicken the chef was extremely helpful to serve the food just the way I wanted… There goes few additional points to Sandy beach resort!
After a small chat I was enlightened by the receptionist on what to explore in this tiny island. The first expedition was the boat trip which was one of the most memorable experiences in Pangkor
If you are visiting any resorts situated close to beaches near Kuala Lumpur a boat trip is a must try! Our boat trip started with island hopping.. Coral island, Monkey Bay, Turtle bay were stop over’s and the staff were generous to share their knowledge about these tiny island pieces.
The next awesome experience was fish feeding right before we got into to sea for snorkeling.
Snorkeling was one of a kind experience as the sea water was green like lake water which I have seen back home. I have only snorkeled in the blue transparent waters which always gives me the comfort to swim with the lovely marine species. Even though snorkeling in the greenish water was quite a spooky moment colorful fish been so friendly around me made my fears fly away.
Localize yourself with island life
The few days spent at this beautiful island was the best active form of me in my whole Malaysia trip..Cycling around the island through the shady greenery catching fresh air, trying out local food in the night stalls and filling up my tummy with different types of tasty local food and evenings spent at the shore just reading a book or walking along the beach side while engaging in a chat with the rest of the tourists at the resort…the list can just go on!
If you have few extra days to hop into a bit of island life you would not regret the time spent at a beautiful coastal side of Malaysia at a nearby beach to Kuala Lumpur..
These are some best Beaches near Kuala Lumpur…
Let me know if you need any tips for your beach holiday in Pangkor and I will be more than happy to help you with my awesome experience!

We are going to kl for first time in September, wasn't planning a trip to an island, but after reading your post not so sure.
What was the cost to get there including ferry and cost of hotel per night.
Would really like to get to the beach but not sure to just do a day trip or something like you have done.
Would appreciate and info that you have.
